[Letter from William O. Douglas to the State Department:]

To Walter John Stoessel, Jr. (1)

May 23, 1955

Dear Mr. Stoessel:

Colonel Moreau of the CIA and some of the men from his office were in today going over with Mr. Kennedy (2) and me some of the details of our proposed trip to Soviet Central Asia. The conversation with them proved to be very interesting and helpful. I hope we can turn up some information of value to them on our return from Soviet Central Asia.

       [...]

       [Urofsky's footnotes:]

       (1) Stoessel (1920 - ) served as the chief desk officer in the State Department for Russian affairs from 1952 to 1956; he later put in stints as ambassador to Poland, Russia, and West Germany.

       (2) Robert Kennedy accompanied WOD on this trip; see _The Court Years_ [Douglas' autobiography, which contains some very harsh words about the CIA], 305-7.
